The Route To Becoming a Driving Instructor

The Route To Becoming a Driving Instructor in Essex

The usual route to becoming a driving instructor starts with answering some basic questions,

  1. Are you over the age of 21?
  2. Do you hold a full driving licence for the category you wish to teach? e.g. (B =Car)
  3. Do you have any motoring convictions?
  4. Do you have any other types of convictions?

You must be over the age of 21 and must have held a B category licence for a minimum of 3 years to be able to apply to become a driving instructor. You may also be stopped from applying if you have been convicted of some motoring offences or criminal offences.

The type of car you hold a licence for will determine if you can apply to be an instructor for automatic only or both manual and automatic cars. If you hold an automatic licence you will only be able to instruct in an automatic car but if you hold a manual licence you can instruct in either.

Let's presume that you have answered all the questions positively you can now move onto the next stage, which is,

  • Applying for a criminal records check for a driving instructor
  • Apply to the Driving Standards Agency to become a driving instructor
  • Take and pass 3 qualifying tests
  • Then apply for your 1st Approved Driving Instructor licence/badge

To get a records check completed you must apply to a company called TMG. Your KUDOS trainer will walk you through this. Applying to go onto the Driving Instructor register is obtained through the DVSA and again your KUDOS driving instructor will help you with this.

With a wealth of experience in the industry, we can help you through the three Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) tests. We guarantee that you will find work with a good reputable company, or we can help set yourself up as an independent driving instructor.

Our staff not only have many years in teaching and training, helping a variety of trainees further their qualifications and achieve the highest grades but we also know the business side of the driving instructor industry and this is why we will be there to help and guide you for the rest of your career. Offering advice even after you pass as a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and helping to keep the roads safe in Essex and across the UK.
